The truth?
The truth is I struggle. Everyday is a battle. Lately it’s been a losing one. But you see, that’s where God comes in. He looks at me, this pathetic mess, and sees something of worth. He says, “Son, I never asked you to fight your battles. I’ll fight them for you. I just want you to stand.”

I was born with the flesh of man no more than a babe with a purity that only I have ever attained. From the time that I was born, temptation showed me it’s ways, but I walked out and never looked back. From the time that I was born, the world has tried to change me. But this love, this selfless love, will change the world instead. Any way that my God has called is the way I was meant to follow through. I’ll live my life to show you forgiveness. I’ll lessen myself to that of a servant, so I can show you love. It wasn’t funny the first time a man approached me with intent to take my life. This isn’t just a fairy tale. A life of sadness, a life of death would be crushed upon my dying breath. My white skin stained from my broken veins. The whip crashes down again and again. I begin to cry because with every hit you’re forgiven. Every time. This one’s for the sins of your fathers that bind you in shame. This one’s for the times that you’ve lied to cover up your mistakes. This one’s for the people you’ve murdered for your personal gain. This one’s for you!

Denzel Washington, Martin Luther, and Our Strange Neglect of the Bible
What if you and I discovered that God himself – yes, the God who made the universe – was scheduled to speak at a certain college lecture hall or sports arena? I contend that we would spare no expense, time, or energy to get to that event and hear exactly what he had to say. We would be desperate to hear that word from God. And yet, that is what we claim about the Bible. Orthodox Christians around the world affirm and believe that the Bible is the very word of God. Yet do you and I seek to hear it just as desperately? If we are being honest, the answer for most of us would probably be “no”.
